My Students

We are the Chemists of Payneville! We will not help build the School to Prison Pipeline but we are groundbreaking in building the Chem to College pipeline!

They are brilliant, charming young science explorers.

This year most of them will just be starting to prepare for college. My school is categorized as the lower performing schools in the county and in need of extra support and assistance for our students, who all experience high levels of poverty, violence and educational inequity.The majority of my students will either be the first or in the first generation of their families to attend college. Statistically, only 27% of them will graduate college within four years (compared to 42% of students whose parents graduated from college). But not the Payneville Chemists, we all aspire to go to college.

My Project

My students will become better class participants by using the document camera to follow along on their handouts as I teach. Most of my students have not honed necessary note-taking skills to ensure they are pulling the pertinent information and summarizing it so that they may reference it when referring back to their notes. With the use of the Chromebook, the students can record themselves articulating the information as evidence of them not only understanding it but explaining concepts in their own words. Our school lost most of our glassware from a pipe bursting in our stockroom. These donations will help my students stay focused, as they will have notes to read, glassware to use, and technology to help push them forward intellectually.

The donations will help improve my classroom by helping what can sometimes be a very transient environment feel like home.

They will leave my classroom inspired and with skills to help them to be successful in whatever post secondary path they choose.
