Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My class has been engaged in a comprehensive study of animals, focusing on their various roles and contributions. Recently, we went to a farm, where we observed a working dog. We learned that while some dogs serve as pets, others are designated as working dogs or service animals, providing invaluable assistance to individuals. Additionally, we explored the issue of animal shelters and the need for responsible care and adoption of these animals.

Following our recent assessment, which yielded exceptional results, I would like to propose a celebratory learning event that allows us to continue our educational momentum.

I have devised a plan to integrate mathematics and reading with interactive activities inspired by dogs.

I will organize a fun learning celebration that features mathematical games, including word problems using thematic Scooby-Doo bone snacks, graphing with Scooby-Doo gummies, and treats. I have prepared dog-shaped containers to facilitate the hands-on activity of feeding the dog figures bones corresponding to the solutions of the word problems, enabling students to practice addition and subtraction in a playful manner. In the language arts component, students will engage in matching puzzles utilizing vocabulary words, which will be shaped into bones, and they will be able to read to the puppy plush toys. Furthermore, I have developed board games with differentiated vocabulary levels for students to explore.

Upon completion of the activities, each student will keep and enjoy the Scooby bone snacks, gummies, The Pokey Puppy book, and other celebration gifts I have for them. Additionally, I will facilitate a discussion that allows students to select local dogs to which we can donate the collected dog treats and toys they read to. This initiative not only aims to enhance the welfare of community dogs but also seeks to instill a sense of civic responsibility and compassion toward animals.
