This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach high school math (grades 9-12) in a small NYC public school in Brooklyn. My students are motivated and eager, but, like all students, many have a love/hate relationship with math!

This is our first year tackling geometry as a stand-alone course under the new New York State Regents exams. We'd LOVE to reach many of our math-phobic students (think too much algebra for too many years) with a truly hands-on approach to learning geometry - a math topic that has unfortunately been neglected over the years.

So, what the heck is patty paper? It's the square paper that they use between hamburger patties. Really! But it's great for geometry because it's tactile - it's like perfect tracing paper that students can easily see creases and lines on. (Although there are artists in my family, the gene apparently skips a generation, as I can barely draw a stick figure. With patty paper, though, even I can fold a perfectly straight line!) It also already comes cut as perfect squares. Instead of abstractly talking about geometric shapes, students can create and construct them using simple techniques on the patty paper. The workbooks I have requested will guide them through a variety of exercises to help them do just that. And, students need to work cooperatively to complete the activities, encouraging teamwork and participation. Math is finally TRULY hands-on, even on the high school level!

Math can be beautiful, artistic, and FUN!!! Help us reach our inner-city students with these fun, hands on math activities!
