Many of our middle school students are reluctant readers. This year, all students in 6th through 8th grade read the novel Ghost by Jason Reynolds, and everyone noticed the impact it made.
Students were doing more than just reading; they were having discussions, making connections, and really analyzing the book, even the students who normally don’t participate at all!
We want to keep this momentum going by reading the second book in the series, Patina.
These books are special because unlike many other curriculum texts, our students see themselves in the story. They know the struggles the characters face, they hear their own voice as we read.
For many, these books are mirrors into their own lives, and for others, it provides a window into the lives’ of their classmates. These books are going beyond developing reading and writing skills. They are also developing empathy and understanding.
