My Students

My students this school year are coming into the start of a new year with Mr. Miller. Their hopes are high that we will do some amazing project, but with COVID-19 in the air students need more opportunities to express themselves through art. One of the best aspects about being a teacher is that we are constantly evolving and trying to be the best model for our children. These students come from very loving and attentive families that obviously want the best for their child. As a sort of surrogate father, my hopes are to help my students develop their critical thinking skills and to help initiate a conversation about the responsibilities they have as children of the United States of America.

The school itself is over 70% free or reduced lunch, and lots of my students come from a lower socio-economic background.

In my particular class, I have 14 boys and 13 girls. A few children are African-American, a couple are white, and the rest are Hispanic with the majority claiming Mexican heritage. Our town is known for growing tough kids who understand the value of hard work.

My Project

COVID is ramping up around California, and I need my students to have an artistic outlet to deal with the Stay at Home Orders in effect. Some of my students are having a hard time with the lockdown and they seem to miss their lives and the way they used to express themselves.

I truly believe if they have good art supplies then they can express themselves and have a voice during this unique period in history.

We all know that if children are able to express themselves they are more likely to stand up for what they believe in. I believe this project is crucial not only for student mental health, but that it will give them an opportunity to grow using the medium of pastels. My students are in need of these supplies, so that they can continue to grow and use their VOICE!
