My Students

If Africa is becoming "the forgotten continent," then it is my goal to help my students remember. Most of my students have not been given the opportunity to study Africa's peoples and cultures.

I teach a seventh grade reading-based geography class.

My students are from a very small town and are not given much opportunity to see outside of their town's limits. Our school is a 5-8 middle school and our students graduate with about fifty to sixty classmates. Most of our students remain in our small town after graduation and do not get to see much of the world. I want to give them the desire to experience other places for themselves.

My Project

This past year I did an in-depth study on the Middle East using children's literature. The depth of change I saw in my students was remarkable. They had not ever learned what it was like for other children to live half-way around the world. This project will allow me to do a similar study over Africa. I have requested three different book sets of ten books to provide an opportunity for students to participate in guided reading groups. The other books requested will be used for supplemental, whole-class lessons, as well as provide reading material for students who read below grade level. It is my hope that the books selected will open my students' eyes to what it is like to live in Africa. They will experience African culture, hardships, language, and more. This level of learning would not be attainable through text books alone.
