My Students

Passionate Picasso, Vibrant Van Gogh… who are these artists? I hope my class will one day know.

I teach in a low socioeconomic area in which many children do not get an opportunity to leave their surroundings and explore beyond what is merely around them.

My students are creative, clever, and inquisitive and they love to do projects which will indulge their artistic sensibilities. They work hard in all of their subjects. Yet in today’s society, reading, writing, and math are the main subjects where educators are supposed to maximize their teaching efforts while minimizing other creative subjects. My students adore learning the elements of art and how to draw. It gives them a chance to freely express themselves. Unfortunately, the city in which I teach has plans to close the city library, and at my school we are unable to use the library because of our lack of funds to get a librarian. I want to continue to inspire my students in art.

My Project

I would like to continue teaching my students in the arts and begin teaching them about famous artists such as Picasso, Van Gogh, and Kahlo, to name a few. I have requested famous artists’ biographies by Mike Venezia for weekly read alouds in the classroom. These books are written in such a way where children can understand the text and identify with the artist. I believe they are ready to meet these masters in art and learn about what inspired them. After reading biographies on the artist, I would like them to complete an art project which is inspired by the chosen artist’s drawings. It would be helpful to have materials such as grease pencils, pastels, and markers to accomplish these projects. Their own inspired art work will be compiled into an art portfolio which they can later look back at and see their own originality.

Through these discussions about the various artists, my students will see how each was a unique individual who chose to express themselves despite public opinion.

I hope they too will see that they can also be an individual regardless of what others say.
