My Project

My American Sign Language 3 class is working on a project to solve the problem of social isolation of Deaf students in mainstreamed schools. They are planning on developing a series of events that will bring together Deaf students and hearing students that know sign language in order to advance language skills as well as social opportunities. Their first event is planned for October. They are starting the year off with a fall party for around 75 students, 40 Deaf and 35 hearing. This introduction to their year long plan will be low stakes and give students an opportunity to get to know one another and strengthen connections between both hearing and Deaf as well as Deaf to Deaf.

The resources we are collecting will enable our students to have a fall party together.

Hearing and Deaf students will come together in a social environment to share food and activities while communicating in American Sign Language. This activity will enable all students to participate in real world conversations and bridge the gap of social isolation that is caused by lack of ASL by the hearing student population.
