About My Students

Kyra, Denise, Thomas, Kristal, Jay, Isabella, Alex, Katie, Charles and Isaac are aspiring designers, artists and musicians at our school who want to work directly with experts in New York City to develop the real world skills to realize their dream jobs. Meet the next generation of leaders and innovators!

Our school is one of the most unique public transfer high schools in NYC. Students choose to attend our school because they want a progressive alternative to standardized high schools. Our 600 students attend internships, spending more than 50% of their week in over 200 placements all over NYC. The Design Academy is a pre-professional training initiative that was developed as a collaboration between students, teachers and mentors to fill the need of providing students direct training in design, arts, and music under the guidance of NYC’s top creative industry professionals. Our students want a space to be able to create their own work while being exposed to the newest trends and technologies. They want to build a community for themselves as artists and then link to NYC’s leading creative thinkers. They are all incredibly passionate and talented students who have previously not been given the support to pursue their dreams.

People will do nothing better than what they love to do. These students are filled with energy and ideas and have been creating their work independently in visual and performing arts, music, and design for years. Unfortunately, they have been told by parents and teachers that art isn’t a “real job.” We want to support them in understanding that careers within the creative arts industry is attainable, lucrative, satisfying and plentiful. We need creative industry experts to teach our students how to be professional artists and designers. The classroom visitors will support students in developing a professional portfolio website, personal branding and a body of creative work to exhibit. Students will learn and apply the design process to develop their personal artistic vision and leadership capabilities under the guidance of art and design professionals. As one student said, “Now I feel like I was put on this earth to influence the masses and, if I work hard enough, one day I will show the world what goes through my mind.”

In Their Own Words

We are eager to articulate our vision and direction as artists. Through mentorship, we hope to attain a deeper understanding of the contemporary creative climate while establishing valuable connections. This knowledge would normally prove difficult to come by outside of an opportunity like this. We are open to learning anything new, and this is important to our development because we want to apply these new skills in real-world situations.

It feels like we are finally at a school that wants us to succeed. We want to stoke the creativity we have had since we were young. Everybody has a dream to be great, but to be a great we must be able to create something new. We know that if we keep progressing as an individuals and within our community and pick up on advice from other people, we will be better. We know practice makes perfect, and we learn from experience. If we would be able to live that, we would be extremely grateful.

This project will change the world because it will change us. We are ready to show the world what we are capable of. We are constantly inspired by the vibes and messages transmitted into our minds. This is another step in the process, and we look forward to contributing to not only the design academy but the world. We would love to know how it feels to be in a professional environment that appreciates our ideas and creations. This is what our school is about. This is why we came here.
