Help! I can't tell who "gets it" and who is completely lost!
I teach 75 wonderful 7th and 8th grade students in a charter school.
Nearly 80% of my students are minorities who receive free or reduced price lunch. They love our school, they love learning, and I love them!
My Project
A major teacher conundrum: You ask a question to the class, 5 kids raise their hand, you know these kids know the answer so you call on a kid whose hand is not raised. To your surprise, they get the answer correct! Yay! However, you are still left wondering if the other 20 kids in the classroom also got the right answer.
A wonderful teacher solution: Have all students write their answer to the question on a wipe boards. Then, countdown, "3 - 2 - 1, hold up your boards!" Now you are able to visually see which kids get it and which kids don't! You know who can move on and start working on their own, and who needs a little extra teacher support.
The downside: Wipe boards are NOT cheap and neither are their markers! Please help me afford this fantastic classroom addition, so that I can help my students!
When I am able to know which students need help and which do not, I am able to use my time more wisely - targeting individuals or small groups with more teacher support, and letting others advance in the curriculum faster.
