This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At our diverse school in Brooklyn, we are dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing environment where students can thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. Many of our students are native Spanish speakers. They are wonderful, energetic and always curious, and enjoy our interdisciplinary, project-based, arts and technology-infused curriculum. Our goal is to create an inclusive, stimulating, collaborative environment where all children feel supported and loved. Creating spaces where school is seen as an extension of the home is one way we achieve this goal.

My Project

Lunch in the cafeteria is one of the most meaningful parts of the school day. Students socialize with peers, enjoy a meal, and relax and recharge for classroom activities. The cafeteria is often where appropriate social interaction is modeled and taught, and administrators, teachers, and food service personnel collaborate to build a positive environment. Over the past few years, we have changed the way lunch is organized to create small groups within the large cafeteria. Designing the cafeteria to look more like a café, with décor promoting healthy eating, makes it more inviting. Small round tables have replaced some of the long tables with benches.

Round tables with chairs decrease the number of students in a space and give them a less crowded more social place to eat.

It encourages inside voices as children are close to each other, and creates a calmer environment. We have almost replaced all of the long tables, and we now only need five more. Donating to this project will bring us closer to our goal! Research shows that when the cafeteria environment is pleasant and calm, students eat more of their lunch, do better in their academic work, and have fewer behavioral problems.
