Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a diverse Long Island City kindergarten classroom. My students hail from a number of different backgrounds and speak countless languages. Twenty-three eager and energy-driven young learners are committed to always working hard and giving 100 percent effort throughout the academic week, but they have little opportunity to explore play using concrete materials during physical education time. As a first year start up charter school, physical education happens in a borrowed gymnasium, making resources scarce and funding limited.

Play is an essential everyday ingredient in early childhood education. Considerable research proposes that play during the academic day leads to development in fine and gross motor skills and strengthens hand-eye coordination. Play during physical education in addition supports social skills; fostering teamwork and encouraging cooperation. When children play they learn skills that contribute to school success. My school does not have the funding to bring what I need to accomplish what I know my students can learn from. I want to offer the opportunity to explore creative movement and strengthen gross motor development through physical education activities.

What we really need is a parachute that can serve multiple educational purposes. The parachute can bring about more interesting and creative educational and physical games, such as “steal the popcorn” “red rover” and even phonics based learning activities. Not only will it help in developing the children’s gross motor skills, but will promote and support learning through cooperation and collaboration.

You will make it possible for my students explore a variety of physical education activities by encouraging learning through physical movement, joint effort, and fun.
