For this project, I am requesting copies of Octavia Butler's novel, Parable of the Sower, to read with my English classes. This post-apocalyptic science fiction novel centers around a 15-year-old girl who can feel the pain of others and becomes removed from her California home. Through the character's journey, issues of climate change and social inequity are raised. Students will read the novel in class and participate in Socratic Seminars to discuss its plot and themes. We will also make cross-cultural connections to related historical and scientific topics. Butler's novel provides students with a real opportunity to discuss issues that are increasingly relevant and troubling.
In reading and analyzing this dystopian novel, students will learn more about the importance of compassion, community, and persevering when faced with change.
