Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what your parents and teachers told you, "Practice makes perfect!" My students must clear a substantial hurdle this year to move on to 11th grade - passing the Global History and Geography Regents. They need practice exams to develop their skills and learn from mistakes.

My students are all newly arrived immigrants to the U.S.

They have lived in this country for four years or less. 100% of the students qualify for free or reduced cost lunch. Academically, many of our students are behind in the skills and knowledge they need to meet the increasingly rigorous requirements of New York State. Our school believes that students learn best when content and language are integrated, and this is how our students acquire the English language. However, this task is not easy for them; many face literacy challenges in their native language(s). However, they are very hard working and willing to put in extra time after school and on Saturdays to keep up. We just need the resources to provide them what they need.

My Project

We are a school in our second year of operation. As a new school, we have many needs that require a substantial portion of our budget - SMART Boards, text books, laptops and iPads for students, calculators, basic school supplies, etc. One item we can never seem to have enough of is paper. Our teachers work hard every night preparing the best curricula to deliver the tools our students need. The Global History and Geography Regents is, by all accounts, the most difficult of the five required exams for high school students in our state. For our students, this is a particular challenge because of the language barrier and the fact that our students must play catch-up to learn all the core content they did not have upon arrival. I am responsible for teaching them about the history of the world, from the stone age to the post-9/11 realities of today. They need extra time, and extra practice to wrestle with the material. We need paper to give them practice assignments to take home.

By donating to my project, you will enable my students to develop and practice the critical skills they need to learn the core content and pass the required state exam.

This will help them get on track to graduate, further their education, and contribute to our society as educated participants. On behalf of my students, I offer my sincere thanks.
