This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At FHS, we have students from a variety of home and prior schooling backgrounds. Some of my students come from very supportive homes, where their education is encouraged and parental participation is highly valued. Others come from broken homes, foster homes, even correctional facilities. However, in our shared learning space, they always strive for success; they demonstrate resilience; and they persevere.

If I had to describe the majority of the students' background, though, I would say they try their best, but they don't always have much to work with.

Sometimes, they come to school on little to no sleep, as they may have nowhere to sleep. They may come to school on an empty stomach, because there is nothing to eat at home. They may come to school to escape bad situations at home, and this is their safe haven. For this, and other, reasons I admire the students who give it their all, regardless of the circumstances they have been handed.

My Project

My 130+ students' literacy skills range from 2nd grade reading level to college level. Part of the curriculum that I teach requires me to help all students acquire historical thinking skills through the use of primary and secondary documents. For this reason, I need to give students handouts of said documents, but our school is out of paper and the district is not providing us with any more. My students will benefit from your gift of paper by having access to the documents, in hard copy format, so that they can learn to dialogue with the text with which they are being required to familiarize themselves.

Your gift of paper will allow me to use multiple level sources, while making the copies that I need depending on the students' level of literacy.

Because resources are so limited, there are times in which I need to photocopy specific sources, but am unable to do so because there is no paper. If we are to prepare students for college or career, we need to demonstrate to them how to develop their critical thinking skills, and they can only do so by practicing. For this reason, I find it imperative that we provide students with hard copy text for them to write on and interact with. This can only happen if I have paper with which to photocopy the historical documents that I am trying to teach my students to analyze.
