Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We are a school located in the South Bronx, in one of the lowest income districts in the DOE. We are a project based portfolio school, where students do a lot of intense research and writing in all core subjects. I have been funding with my own money snacks that I pick up at local grocery stores like Aldi's. This food benefits them during our two hour class blocks.

How does food help generate better results in the classroom?

It helps with classroom management, by giving students energy to perform tasks. Often when students are hungry they will loose focus, put their head down, become emotional (example, anger, or will leave the classroom looking for food in other classes. This leads to less productivity for both the students and the teacher.

How will your donation help my students mental health? By creating a pantry in the classroom, with Oreos and cheetos, it will allow students access to food for energy. This will lead to them staying more focused on tasks they must complete, in order to finish their projects towards graduation. It will help build community trust, knowing that their teacher is concerned about students health and well being. It will help them understand the value of helping others in our community, and how a community should function. It will help improve mental health, leading to better outcomes for my students in improving self confidence.
