Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher working in low-income and impoverished neighborhoods, I have worked with students who are at higher risk for adversity both inside and outside of the classroom. This year I will have about 500 students each week. Most of my students are African American and Latino and 100% qualify for free or reduced lunch. The pandemic has worsened many of the challenges that our students face daily like poverty, neglect, and mental health. Art is an emotional outlet for many students and a gateway to many opportunities for others.

While I am so excited to begin working with my students, I cannot ignore that virtual learning has exacerbated inequities for students in impoverished communities of color.

Our school should have the same basic necessities that schools in more affluent neighborhoods already have. I love when my students are able to express themselves and try things they never have before. Their success is my success.

My Project

Our current art classroom does not have a sink! This eliminates the opportunity to do any messy projects during art class! It is imperative that students wash their hands, brushes, and anything else that needs to be cleaned after working with different media and to eliminate the spread of COVID 19.

I have many students who have never had the chance to paint, sculpt, or even collage.

My school did not have an art teacher for several years before I arrived. It is located in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city that has been ravaged by the opioid epidemic. I am limited to what art projects we can do because we do not have a sink.

I want this portable sink because it will open up a whole new world of art to my students. With this sink I plan to do styrofoam prints, paintings, and ceramics with my students. I hope to bring hands-on art-making back into our technology driven curricula. Art promotes creative thinking across curriculums, enhances and enriches all learning experiences, teaches problem solving, and helps us learn from our mistakes! Not to mention, art is all around us!
