My Students

Most of my students get two semesters of studio art over the course of 4 years of high school. Until now. I get the chance to offer a painting elective to serious art students who don't really get the opportunity to explore their creativity and passion.

My school has a writing focus so we attract creatively minded, somewhat dramatic students.

Many of them are very independent. Once they are exposed to a new medium or art form, they run with it and create things beyond our expectations. The talent show is the best attended event all year. These kids are hungry to express themselves and they don't have enough chances to make it happen.

My Project

For the first time we are able to offer a painting elective that will really push those students interested in fine arts. I would like them to be able to use, maybe not the best, but definitely not the worst materials available. They will each have their own set of primary and secondary acrylic paints, brushes and canvas paper. They will be responsible for maintaining their own materials and encouraged to supplement what they can. Each week we will focus on a different time period and see how the art of that time represented society at that time. Students will emulate the style and try to represent their own society by painting in that style.

Donations are the vehicle that will make this entire class possible.

Without them, I really don't know how I'll be able to really teach the class and I very much want to. I believe this class will provide many students with a connection to school that they don't always feel in their academic classes as well as a creative outlet for some of the misplaced energy they carry around each day.
