My Students

Looking back to last year and considering that we had less than a $300 budget and I spent hundreds of dollars of my own money for over 300 students, I'm amazed by how much we created together. With DonorsChoose we can have even more art resources to make our art projects.

It is a small rural school district located in the northernmost reaches of New York State.

Nestled in the foothills of the Adirondacks, and on the shore of the Saint Lawrence, as well as the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation. Thanks to Title VII and the Johnson O’Malley federally-funded programs, our district provides educational enrichment programming for its Mohawk student population, which comprises 63 percent of the total school enrollment. Our district is one of 13 districts within New York State which contracts to provide an education to its Native American students, with a commitment to preserve the Mohawk tradition, culture and language within the school system. Title VII is a federally funded formula grant program that currently services 1,017 Native students.

My Project

The 6th & 7th grade middle school students have art every day on a rotating 4 marking period schedule. The Studio Art classes have art every day for the entire year. Our middle school has a S.T.E.M. focus curriculum which often collaborates with art. As an art teacher I have taught rigorous and creative lessons. These art resources, including brushes and paint, will make a big impact with my students in many ways. Only 1 marking period of 7th graders were able to use watercolors for landscapes since I did not have enough for everyone last year. My 6th grade students are painting colorful landscapes, and the 7th & studio art classes are painting still-lifes.

Many students have never used watercolors or mixing palettes!

I personally love watercolor so it's so much fun teaching them. I also think it is an important art skill to learn to mix paints to make new colors.
