Painting Historical Significance - a Student-Led Project

Help me give my students the opportunity to design and paint a mural at our school. With the primer, brushes and paint my world history students will design and complete a mural representing Petaluma's unique history.

My Students

My curriculum is filled with opportunities to challenge all achievement groups and designed to develop independent learners who enjoy stepping forward into growth.

As a graduate of this school, I am proud of the learning environment and support for students. The programs implemented in the last ten years have truly changed the culture. Lawn areas have been transformed into edible gardens, complete with an amphitheater and stage. Homework Lab and Small Learning Communities are in place to ensure no student's progress or lack of progress is unseen. Clusters for juniors and seniors direct students' pathways, aiding in post-secondary exploration. The possibilities for faculty and students are endless. I am proud to be part of this phenomenal school and community. Our school is a very diverse school; students understand expectations and can thrive if open to opportunities provided.

My Project

My world history students experienced Athenian democracy through a simulation to further understand how Athenians contributed to democratic ideals. The overall focus of "the council" (Athenians called this the Boule) and "the assembly"(Athenians called this the Ecclesia) meetings were to discuss issues in our community and decide on one way we believed we could made a difference to improve these issues. We held a council meeting to come up with ideas for our class project. Some of the ideas generated in the meeting were fixing roads, cleaning parks, developing a tutoring program and painting a mural. Using a direct democracy at the assembly meeting, the majority of votes supported enacting change on our own campus by designing and completing a mural highlighting Petaluma’s unique history. Students are currently finalizing a theme and design of the mural, studying the history of Petaluma, working on a presentation to administration, and collaborating with a graphic design class to produce a draft of the mural.

Students hope the mural will be a daily reminder of the historical significance these events have on our community.

This is a unique opportunity to artistically represent their understanding of history through art.
