Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Vincent Van Gogh said, "If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint', then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced." My students would love to have the ability to paint as much as possible without worrying about whether we have enough paint to go around.

I teach art in Texas to 800, low socio-economic students from Prekindergarten-5th grade, who attend art class for 45 minutes once every six days and that is never enough time!

They are always asking for more! Due to this, I open my art room for 30 minutes before the school day begins and the students come in droves! They use this time to complete projects, research artists or show me artwork that they have completed at home.

My Project

The first question asked when the children walk through the door at the beginning of the year is, "Are we going to paint today?" If paint was made available to the students everyday, that would be their medium of choice. Therefore, I am requesting gallon and half gallon jugs of a variety of types and colors of paint (tempera, acrylic and glaze for ceramics). With a school of 800 students, paint is a hot commodity! By purchasing paint in larger quantities, it will allow the students more opportunities to use the medium, without running out. By having a variety of paint (acrylic, tempera, glaze), I can give the students more choice in their artwork, thus helping the children become problem-solvers for the 21st century.

A large quantity of paint in the art room will allow the students more opportunities to create art in the way that they choose to create it.

They will have more choices, thus becoming more prepared for life beyond school.
