My Students

Our school is on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, but my students come from all over New York City. We are one of the most sought-after non-selective college prep high schools. My students are college-bound 9th graders who start each day with an Advisory class that targets students' social, emotional, college and career development.

They have big dreams and aspirations, but often face limited family resources or educational opportunities.

Our school aims to help all students overcome these limitations and thrive.

My Project

We'd like to provide a copy of Ibi Zoboi's award-winning book, "American Street," to every 9th grader at Pace!

We want to put the FUN in the phrase "Reading is fundamental!" Reading should not always be "an assignment" that ends in "a grade," rather it should be an opportunity to imagine and discover!

Each student will get "American Street" to read on their own. We'll have a couple informal discussions about the book in our Advisory classes. 25 students will also get a copy of "Pride," the author's new book just out in hardcover!

Our PACE Reads! celebration will culminate with an author visit by Ibi Zoboi in the spring. The students will be able to hear her read her work and discuss her experiences as a writer and reader.
