My Students
Science should be fun and science should be challenging. Science must be taught in such a way that students form a life long love of the subject matter and hopefully pursue a career in the science field. I teach 7th grade science at a magnet middle school in downtown, urban Nashville. I have 103 diverse learners who are taught using a hands-on, inquiry based, science curriculum. My students are diverse. Our school has many nationalities represented. My students are high achieving, yet, from various different economic backgrounds. Our school is considered to be a school of need according to the number of students that qualify financially for free lunch programs. My students love to learn. They enjoy hands-on labs where they can create products or explain and explore why things occur.
My Project
My students would often complain about the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables available at their local grocery stores. Living in a food desert, the fresh produce options are limited. My students wanted an opportunity to put science into work. We learn about flower reproduction and photosynthesis each year. Through this project my students will address the lack of fresh produce while learning about science.
There's mounting evidence that students who participate in school gardening score significantly higher on standardized Science tests.
My students are training to be our future leaders. This garden allows the students a chance to lead with their peers and within the community. This project being kid-inspired will allow my student time throughout the school day to go outside and actively tend and take care of the school garden. After the garden is ready for harvest, my students will plan how they will distribute the vegetables to the community. This takes plenty of planning, communication with other students and adults in the school, and also the community. The students have to determine how they will market the fresh produce to the people that truly need it and arrange how to give it to those in need. These are all skills needed in college and in their future careers. This project also teaches the kids to think and consider others in need.
