The students I serve all have a specific set of special needs. Our school predominantly serves students who live in poverty and live in trauma. We serve a diverse population and strive to meet the needs of our students. While our caring staff works diligently to serve these wonderful students, and meet our students' needs, the needs of my classroom have changed now that we are 100% virtual.
Avijeet Das has said, "I meet people and they become chapters in my stories." Now remember yourself in 4th grade and what it would have meant to meet an author- a person who is paid to write books!
Not only that you have one of their books where you can read it over and over. What chapter would that reflect in your story? We are working on providing our 4th grade students at Grant Elementary to a chance to meet an author, to see, own, and read one of their books, and feel like they know someone that writes. We want to help add a rich, diverse chapter to their stories!
My Project
The 4th grade students we teach in our classroom are 100% virtual. We teach math, reading, writing virtually. We go to PE, music, and science virtually. Our small groups, whole group lessons are all completed virtually. While we are incredibly fortunate to be virtual and to continue to learn, this new learning environment is hard!
Teachers and students are working so hard right now and this project helps bring a little fun into our virtual classrooms!
This project gives our students the opportunity to own a book from an author they will meet virtually. Specifically this project is for books from an Indigenous author. The text includes English and Indigenous languages. It can help open student minds to the possibility of being writers themselves!
