Owl Pellets to Engage in Ecology

Help me give my students engage in the study of Ecology through owl pellet dissection! Our 8th graders love to explore owl pellets to better understand transfer of biomass in a food web and analyze predator prey relationships.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Understanding our local and global ecosystem is so important for our growing scientists. In 8th grade students begin exploring Ecology by deepening their understanding of interdependence of organisms, effects of abiotic factors on organism and ecosystem health as well as considering amplification of toxins through trophic levels. Students begin by studying our local ecosystem on a mini-field trip, identifying organisms in each trophic level and inferring the effects of stressors on the inherent balance of the ecosystem. We then learn about the transfer of energy from each trophic level and relative amounts of biomass through stations, real-world examples, and mathematical analysis. Adding owl pellet dissection to this experience will allow our students to draw deeper conclusions about predator/prey relationships as well as loss of biomass through careful analysis of the varying remains in the owl pellets. This is always a hit and we would really love our students to get this experience again this year!
