This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

IHS-US is a small public high school exclusively for recently arrived immigrant English Language Learners who have lived in the U.S. for four years or less. Our students come from over 50 different countries and speak over 25 different native languages. We opened in September 2010 as a member of the nationally recognized INPS.

Our mission is to prepare our multicultural immigrant population to embark on their individual journeys.

Our school thrives on diversity and uses it as a driving force to empower our students to collaborate with others, advocate for themselves and their communities, and identify as global citizens. In addition to the class, many of our students work full-time and serve as their families' primary English speakers, leading them to adopt numerous adult responsibilities. In addition, the current political climate can make it difficult for recent immigrants to feel welcome. Thus, this high school is one of the few places they feel safe and able to enjoy life as adolescents.

My Project

Witnessing our current seniors visit and learn from our trip to SUNY Farmingdale last spring motivated my colleagues and I to plan an overnight college trip. Visiting colleges is an important and necessary step in helping students feel that they are both college-ready and interested in applying to college, yet going to visit schools outside of NYC can be expensive. For the first year in school history, we will be bringing a group of students for an overnight to three privates school, Union College, Bard College and Skidmore College in upstate NY to visit. We will be visiting these schools because they have a Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) which provides financial, social-emotional, and academic support for students to successfully matriculate and graduate from these colleges. Furthermore, at both Bard College and Skidmore College, we have our own alumni attending these institutions through HEOP.

Our hope is to give our 11th-grade students, all first-generation and recent immigrants, the opportunity to visit our alumni in order to empower and motivate them to follow their footsteps.

The majority of our students are low-income and have numerous responsibilities, including working after school and on weekends to support their families. They do not have the time or resources to fund-raise money for a bus trip or visit colleges on their own time. Visiting a college within the school week will give them insight into the college experience while they can stay committed to their part-time jobs and familial responsibilities. Your donation will allow us to purchase the bus, hotel lodging and a fun excursion after a long day of visiting colleges: bowling. We hope that you will help us in making this trip a reality and paying a huge role in the college trajectory of the Class of 2021.
