Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine coming to class with a draft of your writing that you are burning to share, that you just can't wait to get feedback on your hard earned creativity, and the teacher says, "I can make some copies after school, scan it at home, and maybe we'll have some time to look at it tomorrow."

My students are wonderful.

There are many preconceptions about teaching in Los Angeles, especially when my school is carved out of a former factory next to train tracks littered with refuse. In defiance of all of them, every day I stand at my door and my room fills up with polite, gregarious, eager, and industrious sixth graders. They come with drafts in hand of stories, poems, and essays ready to be shared and discussed in my composition class. They have so much to say! They bring stories about the origins of their names, profiles of heroes like Captain "Sully" Sullenberger who landed a plane in a river, essays about problems in the neighborhood like dog-fighting and gangs, and poems about mixed-up animals like the "Pandaberry" and about the first time they went on a roller coaster or ventured to a store on their own. Every day, my students read, discuss and write their way to becoming better and more confident thinkers and communicators.

My Project

Having a document camera will greatly improve the quality of instruction and feedback that students can receive. Currently, there is no way for us to share materials together on-the-spot. With only a projector and my personal laptop computer, there is no way to instantly share a favorite passage from a book, model revising and editing or my own writing, nor to take written student work and immediately share the text with the class. It's critical that students see the writing process modeled. I write along with my students, and they need to see my drafts as I think-aloud moving around passages, changing words, improving ideas and otherwise marking and scratching my way to clarity in the same struggle they are going through. Students clamor for clear, direct, and immediate feedback on their work. Having a document camera would allow us to instantly share their work with the class, provide feedback together, and see the revisions and edits made directly and successfully.

This project will make an immediate difference in the lives of many students.

Being able to share their work throughout the writing process, this project will greatly enhance the ability of my students to take the leap, stand before their peers, and say that "I am a writer."
