This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach special education students in 3rd and 4th grade. My students have disabilities such as autism, learning disabilities, and emotional impairments. Most are from low income households and are first generation English speakers. My students are at least two years below grade level in reading due to specific learning disabilities like Dyslexia.
In my classroom, I am using an intensive reading program known as the Wilson Reading System.
This is a research-based, intensive, highly structured and multi sensory literacy instruction program for students who have not responded to other reading interventions.
My Project
Cursive Handwriting is becoming an endangered species in the American public education. According to the National Center for Learning Disabilities, children with reading disabilities benefit from cursive handwriting because it helps them with the decoding process. It integrates hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and other brain and memory functions.
In the digital world, my students get very little practice and instruction in writing cursive.
I plan to incorporate cursive instruction with the Cursive Writing 3rd grade kit, in my multi-sensory intensive reading instruction. I would also be able to assign this as homework and they would be able to do this independently without relying on their parents to help them.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
