My Students

~All students can learn, just not on the same day or in the same way. ~ My goal is to help them learn something new everyday,to help them appreciate the differences in life, and approach everything with an open mind.

My day begins passing out breakfast to my first period student.

More than 80% of the students that attend my school qualify for free or reduced lunch. Working in an impoverished system means that a large amount of time is spend ensuring student's basic needs are met. How can I be mad if someone did not bring a pencil when they slept on the floor last night? How can I be mad at a student who does not have paper and their parents do not have any mode of transportation in a rural area with no transportation infrastructure? Focusing so much energy on meeting basic needs means that creative projects are usually left by the wayside due to funding issues. Students who are struggling readers when they reach high school are at risk of dropping out.

My Project

I teach high school English Language Arts. Our campus has recently begun the process of wiring and establishing a wireless Internet connection at our school. Even though our textbooks have online resources we are limited to accessing it on the five student computers in my classroom. Tablets and headphones, in conjunction with the Internet connection hopefully by August 2016, will allow students to listen to material from our textbook. It will encourage reluctant readers to read and help struggling readers focus without the distraction of how to pronounce a word. Art supplies will allow me to incorporate a creative aspect to my lessons. Our system does not offer art class, but I know that my students can benefit from incorporating hands-on activities into their learning process. I want to empower students through art and have them bring their texts to life in 2D and 3D creations. It will build their confidence, allow them to see difference perspectives, and use their imaginations to help make connections.

These donations will allow my students to experience things that others take for granted.

It will give them the chance to express themselves creatively, appreciate different perspectives, and build their confidence. Having access to online digital tutorials, audio versions of our text sets, and extra practice inside our textbook online will assist struggling students. Please help me inspire the confidence my students need to focus on their success.
