Overcoming Adversity in Dance

My students need multiple copies of Life in Motion books! I am integrating more literacy into my dance program and reading a novel will do the trick.

My Students

"I see dance being used as communication between body and soul, to express what it too deep to find for words." Ruth St. Denis

Dance in my classroom is about uncovering and discovering a voice through movement and expression.

Students immerse themselves a multitude of ways that push them to new limits and challenge them physically and emotionally. My students are eager learners who are diverse culturally and socio-economically. Our school is a college preparatory high school in Southern California with a rigorous core curriculum that is high-demanding. Our performing arts department follows suit with high student learning outcomes as well. Students are expected to rise to the occasion academically despite social and financial obstacles that they may face. Our school is designated low socio-economic status, and we are deemed a Title l school. With all of these high expectations, it is my job to support students' learning and foster literacy in the classroom, even in DANCE curriculum!

My Project

Because of the rigorous core curriculum at our school, I find myself incorporating literacy into my own dance curriculum. Writing and dance you say? YES! Students in dance write in my class and we READ too. There are so many physical and emotional obstacles in dance; not to mention the determination and focus that it takes to really succeed. Many dancers overcome so many adversities along their paths. That is why Misty Copeland's story Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina will support a new unit that I want to create in my current dance curriculum. As I mentioned, dancers face incredible obstacles along their paths to becoming successful in the dance world. My students (aspiring professional dancers and my beginning-level movers) will all connect to the notion of overcoming adversity. It is inevitable in our lives.

I have great plans for this new unit.

I am going to be incorporating online discussions as well as class discussions that will be valuable and will support overall literacy in education. Please consider donating to this project as it is not just near and dear to my heart but I know that it will connect with so many of my students. Thank you, in advance, for your support and contributions.
