My Students

"The way I see it, as soon as a baby is born, he should be issued a ukulele!" - Linus, from "Peanuts"

My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds, but they all share a love of music.

Kindergarten through eighth grade, they enjoy singing, playing instruments, dancing and composing music. Our school is an award-winning school, recognized as a Magnet School of Excellence by Magnet Schools of America. Our school is also a "Title 1" school, with a majority of students receiving free/reduced lunches. Our teachers work hard to provide quality learning experiences for our students. Through the International Baccalaureate program, our students are encouraged to be curious, ask questions, and become internationally-minded. In music class, my students enjoy learning about music from different cultures. They regularly engage in hands-on music-making activities that give them the opportunity to become musicians and composers in their own right. They are enthusiastic learners, and they deserve to have quality musical instruments with which to develop their musical skills and expression!

My Project

This year was my first year teaching ukulele. I had five ukuleles that a friend had bought in Hawaii for me, plus another ten that I borrowed from another music teacher in the school district. After extensive repairs to the the borrowed ukes, we were ready to go in January! My 6th grade World Music class had a blast learning how to play these instruments. We started off with learning traditional folk songs like "There Ain't No Bugs on Me" but soon moved on to learning doo-wop classics - "Stand By Me" and "Earth Angel" to name a few. Now several students in class are so taken with the ukulele that they come up to the music room during the lunch period to learn new songs. With these new instruments and accessories, I'll be able to share the simple joy of ukulele with even more students at my school. Students will learn how to tune, care for, and play their ukuleles. We'll continue to learn songs from different cultures and times, including songs that the kids already know and love!

Your donation toward new ukuleles will make a huge difference in the lives of my students.

I have seen the changes that take place when a child is given a chance to play this simple instrument. When they discover what they can play on the ukulele, their eyes light up! Students who previously lacked confidence are empowered to take the stage and perform with their ukulele. They begin to see themselves as musicians, songwriters, and performers. The ukulele gives voice to their creative expression!
