Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello, I am a third and fourth grade inclusion teacher at a highly disadvantaged public school in the Bronx. My students do not have individual desks to sit at, rather, they sit at tables of 4-5 students each. Unfortunately, these tables contain no storage space. My students have 3 books they use for math, 2 for reading, 2 for writing, one for phonics, and one for social studies/science. A great deal of teaching time gets taken up when the students must get up each period and switch their books. There are 7 periods a day and it takes about 5 minutes each period to switch books (minimum) - this is over 35 minutes a day of teaching time I am losing. Each class period is 50 minutes, so essentially I am losing more than half of one period of teaching a day! This is frustrating not only for the class, but for me as well! Organization is a very important factor in the learning process. It is extraordinarily challenging to be organized when you have no place to put your materials. Right now, we are using shelf space around the room, but these shelves need desperately to be used for holding books for our classroom library. Life in our classroom would be so much better for everyone involved if my students had book baggies on the backs of their chairs. All together, I would need 25 baggies. With the aid of these baggies, the classroom will be neater, my students will be much more organized, and so much time will be saved that can then be used for teaching! Over the chair storage baggies would benefit each one of my 25 students (and myself) more than words can express. Thank you so much in advance!
