My 4th and 5th grade students with autism love to read, and our classroom library is a place that sees a lot of action. Each day during the independent reading portion of our reading workshop, each student has the opportunity to read a book on his own or with a partner. This reading time has drastically improved my students' literacy skills, and their enthusiasm for books, over the past several years.

Our current classroom library needs some updates. In the past we have received a few very generous donations from DonorsChoose that have filled our classroom library shelves with books of many levels and genres. Now, it has become apparent that what we need more than anything is a more organized library so that students can access "just-right" books without the help of a teacher. In order for students to easily access books that will motivate and challenge them, books are organized into bins labeled by reading level and genre. Several years ago when I began teaching, I purchased my own set of woven plastic book bins. However, four years of wear and tear later, it is apparent that bins with woven sides are not the most durable of book containers. My old bins are literally falling apart! On top of that, we simply do not have enough shelves or bins to accommodate our growing library. I have a closet full of books that are not in our library because I have no way to organize them for student access.

With the addition of a bookcase and a collection of sturdy new book bins, I am confident that my students will be able to easily access all of the books in our collection, and find books at their correct reading level about topics they are interested in. This will allow us to spend more time reading instead of searching for books, which will in turn help make students more independent and confident in their reading ability.

Please consider contributing to the "renovation" of our classroom library. I am confident that adding a bookcase and new book bins will create an organized, accessible library to support my students' reading development for years to come. Thank you!
