This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My first graders are just learning to read. It is my hope they will grow up loving to read. To do that, they need exposure to books and an environment in which text is readily available and accessible. Here’s the reality: over 75% of my kids have few or no books at home. Even print materials such as newspapers and magazines are non-existent. The only books they see are at school. Given the extremely dense curriculum nowadays, there are very few opportunities for children to take the time to linger and browse for books for their own enjoyment, and they might —at best — get 20 minutes a week allotted for time in the school library. So a classroom library of donated books is the best option for them to gain constant exposure to high-quality printed matter they can peruse at their leisure.
Access to an orderly, attractive library nook in the classroom makes the prospect of reading for pleasure more of a possibility for these young readers.
I already have a collection of books gleaned over several years from book wholesalers, former library collections, thrift stores, and donations from friends and family. What’s lacking is an attractive way to display the books so the children can retrieve them safely and return them in an organized manner. Book bins I can organize by subject matter, reading level, and areas of interest would be a game-changer in my classroom. The bins would allow them to see the books and spend more time reading than struggling against the stacks and rows of books constantly tipping over or spilling off the shelf.
Please consider helping our 6-year-olds experience the dignity of selecting books independently and being able to care for them responsibly in our classroom library.
