My Students

My students love to learn through hands-on, real world experiences. Many of my students come from low income families and do not have the same opportunities as others. A majority of them qualify for free and reduced lunch, have parents in prison, and some are even homeless. I try to do hands-on activities daily. There isn't anything better than to hear one of them shout out, "I did it!" What happens in their homes is out of my control. What I can control is giving them a comfortable, loving, classroom set up for hands-on learning. With this, they will have a chance to explore and succeed and have many more "I did it's!" in life.

My Project

The crates, with added cushions, will become seating for an outdoor classroom. The students will be able to explore situations, nature, etc. outside of the traditional classroom. This will give them real world examples. For example, when teaching observation vs inference, going outdoors will enhance the lesson. Students will be able to observe their surroundings, brainstorm, and come up with examples of each. We are also starting an outdoor garden this year. This will not only teach them about scientific inquiry and nutrition but they will harvest the vegetables to be used in their school lunches. The crates can be used to carry supplies or to sit on while they are weeding the garden. The possibilities are endless!
