Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My second grade students come with very little outdoor experiences or knowledge. Most have never had the opportunity to observe nature, so they have no understanding of why things happen in nature. They need this basic knowledge to learn to appreciate and take care of our environment.

My second grade students are from low income families and attend a public school in Texas.

They come with very little background knowledge and are eager hands on learners. Over half of my students are ESL learners so I need to provide as many experiences as possible, so they can gain needed skills and vocabulary to succeed in school. Many of the students are fascinated every time we go to our Outdoor Learning Environment and have many questions about their world.

My Project

Because my students are inquisitive and want to know why things happen, the weather center, thermometer and cloud charts will help them to gather data and make predictions about the weather. They will also observe how weather affects their environment. The leaf identification kit will allow my students to classify the trees in our school yard and the compass will allow them to create a map of where the different trees are located. From this information the students can create a field guide of the trees for other classes to use as a learning tool. The students will have the opportunity to get a whole new perspective of nature as they use the field microscopes as they explore. The Science Flip Chart will be a learning tool for information as they explore our Outdoor Learning Environment. The Backyard Collection of books will allow the students to read more about animals, insects, and birds. This will help to increase their reading comprehension and will connect science and literacy.

Donating to this project would greatly improve the educational experiences of my students and many more students in the years to come as these tools will be used again and again.

This will help to inspire curiosities and to help motivate student learning. The students will also gain an appreciate of their world and how to take care of it.
