Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like chasing butterflies or watching an insect on the ground? My students have very little experience doing this because they live in an urban inner city neighborhood. They also have little experience using resources to support their investigations.

My school is a year round school; so we can do outdoor real-world inquiry the beginning of the school year while weather is still mild.

Students have not done much outdoor observation out of school because of the neighborhood and lack of such family based activities. Their research experience is primarily "assignment" based and often unengaging. I have some classroom pets (lizards, crabs, turtles) in my room which are major attractions because of student lack of pets at home and outdoor experience. Students are eager to learn more about the world around them; yet they don't have the resource tools to help them learn as much as possible about their findings.

My Project

The nets will allow students to capture insects for temporary observation; to be released upon completion. The collection of field guides will allow students to work in small groups as they do outdoor inquiry observations. The guides will help keep them engaged in learning as they learn how to identify living things using the guides (and rocks/minerals). They will be able to make connections between objects found/observed - shared habitat, climate, food, etc. Then they will be able to write their own summary of each observation; demonstrating their learning and moving their learning further as they publish their new found knowledge. They will be engaged learners which will motivate them to continue their observations and research!

Students need to be motivated and engagement in their learning is the best way to do this; as well as connect their learning to their self.

Using their school outdoor setting to study living and non-living elements in their environment will engage students and increase their learning. Research skills will be developed which are critical to success in future schooling and their adult lives.
