Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our student population consists of predominantly Hispanic students (77%) with 54% qualifying for the Free and Reduced Lunch program. Many of them are working after school so they can contribute to their families financially. Some find themselves working into the night and some even miss school occasionally because they need more hours at work. This has led to many students becoming disengaged in school.

Many of our students have never had the chance to spend a night away from of their work, school, family obligations, etc.

Due to the high poverty level of our students, many of them will never have the chance to go away for a camping night/weekend. Having a school based opportunity to spend time away from their premature responsibilities is a common thread throughout many conversations with students. This three day, two night trip will also give them the chance to explore the great outdoors that we are so fortunate to have at our fingertips in Colorado.

Each year we are able to offer a day trip involving fishing, hiking, or biking. Our kids are thrilled when these opportunities arise, and they carry the memories, ideas, and experiences with them for many years.

My Project

Colorado offers many options/activities for outdoor experiences and our students do not get to engage in these activities regularly, if at all. Our goal is to increase student engagement in an academic setting by providing a customized, interactive and experiential opportunity that is specifically tailored to our natural landscape in Colorado. A trip to Cal-Wood Education Center will also allow students to be active, connect with peers and staff, and further their knowledge of the world around them.

On this overnight trip, students will increase their capacity to work as a team and will learn that they can trust peers and adults.

Our students often struggle with trusting others as they have had many negative experiences with adults and their peers. They will gain a skill set that will aid them in learning to elicit help from others when they need it.

Many of our students have never had the chance to truly experience the Colorado wilderness. We have seen the positive results of interactive, outdoor experiences. These experiences are vital in helping our students develop meaningful connections with peers and staff.
