This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I would like to give my students, many of whom are not allowed to play outside during rainy days, a chance to see the world in a new way and to experience nature without fear of getting their clothing wet or muddy, which often equals getting in trouble with their parents.

My students come from a variety of backgrounds, but the majority of them are from a lower or middle class socioeconomic background.

Many of my students are not provided with experiences with nature outside of school. We have a new outdoor classroom that cannot be enjoyed on drizzling days because students are not prepared to go out in wet weather. I would like to give my students the opportunity to explore the outdoors in a new way.

My Project

My students are scheduled to use the outdoor classroom twice per week, but in the spring time it can be difficult to get outside due to the rain. My students would use the rain boots and raincoats to explore our outdoor classroom to gain firsthand knowledge of the natural world.

This donation will help us take our learning outside so we can actively construct knowledge of the world around us.

It will give many of my students their first experiences with watching rain collect in a river bed, witnessing how animals and insects behave in the rain, and for some this will be the first time they are allowed to splash in a puddle. All of these things seem inconsequential to grown ups, but they mean the world to the children with whom I work.
