Outdoor Classroom Needs Composters

My students need the composters to allow them to grow successful, edible plants from seeds to harvest which will ensure that they can observe & predict 1st hand science.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. West's classroom raised $1,052

My Students

Grace our garden with great soil! Our students have a large outdoor area for planting, questioning, observing and harvesting edible veggies but our soil is mostly clay so our crops haven't been successful. By giving us composters we could add it to our soil and learn about biology simultaneously.

Our students are first graders from nine different classrooms.

We reside in a building that serves PK-2 students. Our school is located in Ohio in a partially rural area. The students are very active and have inquisitive minds and enjoy being outdoors.

My Project

At our school we believe that "men love to wonder, and that is the seed of science" ~Ralph Waldo Emerson. The composters that we are requesting will allow our students to wonder and find answers to many scientific subjects. The first area of learning that we will be able to teach is the process of composting. We will learn about how it works, why it works, and the benefits of using compost. After we have successfully created compost then students can go on to see the benefits of using compost on plants in both spring and the summer. We will grow edible salad crops (lettuce, carrots, radishes, onions, and peas) in the spring and then celebrate with a salad harvest day where we will reap our harvest with new science and nutritious snacks. Then in the summer we will plant and grow a "three-sisters garden" (popcorn, pole beans, pumpkins). This crop will be harvested in the fall and we will pop the popcorn and discuss the Native American traditions. These lessons offer hands-on science.

Choose composters for us because we choose hands-on, authentic science activities for our students.

As an educator I know that the real teaching of science doesn't occur from a book or in a classroom but instead outside in nature. We are fortunate to have an outdoor growing area and now we just need the tools to make it successful. Having the composters will ensure this and also offers our students the ability to ask and answer their own questions about nature as our crops are successful.
