My Students

Imagine that everyday you are surrounded by dark gray concrete and noise. You long to go outside to play, but your neighborhood is "not safe" and the local park is too crowded for you to really enjoy the outdoors. This maybe hard for many people to imagine, but this is reality for my students.

My students are mostly at-risk youth (ages 16-21) who come from very difficult home lives (both emotionally and financially) and who deserve the opportunity to experience life outside of the city.

Many of my students come from high school environments where they felt like outcasts- some were mercilessly teased for identifying as LGBT, or for just deciding not to follow the "in" crowd. At our high school, we do everything we can to encourage and celebrate our students' diversity! Unfortunately, many of our students complain that they never get the chance to be outside. Some have never even seen stars at night! This is just heart-breaking. Children and young adults should be given any and all opportunities to be outside playing and experiencing nature first hand! My students deserve to go on this trip so that they can get out of the city, experience the country, and experience new activities like engaging in high ropes courses and eating S'mores over a campfire for the first time!

My Project

I am requesting for you to help me and my colleagues fund this trip because some of our students have never experienced life beyond a mere 20 blocks of their own homes. This field trip may truly be the "once in a lifetime" opportunity for our students to experience team-building, and self-esteem boosting activities that are simply not available to them in their everyday lives. The cost of this trip includes everything: the activities, sleeping quarters, meals, and transportation for our students. This is a small price to pay to potentially change our students' lives for the better. Many of our students have been ridiculed, ostracized, and even physically harmed at their previous high schools. They have come to us because they are yearning for support, understanding, and the chance to feel good about themselves. While our school does provide this environment, this field trip would really give our students the chance to show themselves just how priceless and amazing they really are.

This project is so vital to my students, because providing them with any chance, namely a very unique and inspiring chance to show themselves how much they are valued, how they can achieve and overcome anything, and how their teachers at their school and their fellow classmates are there to support them can literally be that one experience to motivate them to strive for something better for themselves, and in a few cases, to show them their self-worth and save their lives.
