I am a high school biology teacher in Downtown Charleston, South Carolina. My students come from varied socioeconomic backgrounds, but they all share an interest in Environmental Science. My students chose to participate in a series of classes and short courses that emphasize natural resources, ecology and the environmental science of our state. My students enjoy the challenges of studying environmental science as well as analyzing data and current events to to get a deeper understanding of what environmental problems our community is facing.
My students are eager to get outside and get their hands dirty to learn about the environment through experiences and hands-on activities.
My students are hardworking, energetic and full of curiosity. I love seeing them discover new things and over come challenges as they work through my courses and grow as learners.
My students are participating in a short course that is a part of a series of environmental science classes they will complete throughout high school. In this short course, the students will focus on developing outdoor skills while also learning about the local environment and conducting environmental research. Over spring break, my students will have an opportunity to travel to the upstate of South Carolina to learn about this unique physio-graphic region and learn basic hiking and camping skills. During this camping trip, students will conduct scientific field investigations and learn about the conservation and management of local flora and fauna. Most of my students have limited experience in the outdoors. Being immersed in the outdoors while camping and hiking for several days will help my students gain confidence, new skills and learn environmental science through experience.
Camping, hiking and other outdoor activities are the ultimate way to truly learn about the environment and grow citizens that will foster environmental stewardship for the rest of their lives.
I know how valuable outdoor experiences can be for high school students. My students are excited to step outside of their comfort zone, get dirty and experience something new with their classmates. I am excited to help them learn and discover through this unique camping trip.
