This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My recent immigrant students come from over 50 countries and speak over 30 languages. They are not the children of United Nations employees but of car service drivers, construction workers, and bodega owners. They are all studying the history of their NEW country for the first time and love it.

Our school has 380 students who are all recent immigrants, come from over 52 countries, and speak over 30 languages.

They truly work as hard as they possibly can, are hungry for knowledge, and strive to improve their English/history each day. They come from so many different countries and are supportive and empathetic of each student regardless of where they come from -- in their eyes, they are all in the same position and need to help and support each other to find success. They love United States history and learning about the different groups that struggled for equality in our country and about the countless individuals that helped shape the country to what it is today.

My Project

I have realized just how important the size of the laptop (and the quality) is during the last few months of teaching US history remotely to my students. It has been very difficult to run my remote lessons with my old and "small" MacBook Air. It is a challenge to not have a larger screen to see all of the kids and seeing the content I'm sharing on the small screen has been a real drag. There are a variety of new programs and apps that I'm trying to use to make my lessons more dynamic and my current laptop just can't maintain the functionality of them and I cannot use them all.

A new and more powerful laptop will clearly benefit my students from day #1 as my lessons will be more interesting and easier to run with the use of new and interesting content!

Since COVID-19 and teaching remotely there has been a need to diversify the style of content delivery from simple Google Slides or Powerpoint to new flashy ways of presenting with tools like Nearod, Peardeck, ThingLink, and others but my old laptop simply cannot run them efficiently and my students are missing out. I would use these programs daily/weekly and there is a direct benefit for my students if I have a new and more powerful laptop.
