My Students

I teach in a Title I school where 100% of the students qualify for free meals. Approximately one-third of my students are English Language Learners, some coming from monolingual families. All of my students have the potential to be anything they desire!

My students come from various backgrounds and cultures, but they all have one thing in common.

They all attend a school where each of them is seen as a part of our School Family! In this School Family, we strive to encourage the students and motivate them in their endeavors, both academic and extracurricular. It is in this School Family that the students can feel safe and learn how to take on new challenges! It is my goal this year to help my students understand how having a growth mindset will help them improve in all areas of their lives.

My Project

I have spent time this summer and last school year really delving into the topic of fixed versus growth mindset. I am so excited to begin the school year with a unit of study based on mindset, as well as follow-up activities throughout the school year. These activities will help students work towards growth rather than perfection, and students will make great gains all year long!

Research shows students with a growth mindset achieve better in school; people with a growth mindset achieve more in life!

I want to provide my students with the information and skills necessary to allow them to choose a growth mindset in all that they do. These books will supplement the materials that I have already created and purchased, and they will provide relatable examples of growth mindset.

Students will hear and read stories of characters like Wilma who overcame health issues and eventually earned an Olympic medal ("Wilma Unlimited") or Floyd who tried everything he could to get his kite unstuck ("Stuck"). Stories like "Someday" will teach the students that what we do right now will prepare us to reach our future goals. In "What Do You Do With an Idea," students will see comments like "I actually thought about giving up on my idea" followed by "I liked being with my ideas. It made me feel more alive, like I could do anything." This will help students see that they can learn to adopt a growth mindset.

This collection of stories will help me provide relevant and relatable situations for my students through literature, which will help them learn how to take on new challenges with a growth mindset!
