Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What do I love about my students? I love watching them learn! I love seeing them read something or listen to something and making a connection to the world around them.

The majority of my student population comes from low income families with little to no background knowledge, and many of them are learning English for the first time and might just be the only English speaker in their home.

Much of the information they acquire comes from the experiences that they are exposed to in class.

Just like the information they learn comes from school, so do their technology and learning materials. These students rely heavily on teachers and staff to give them what they need both physically and emotionally. It is for these reasons that it brings me so much joy to see the spark light up in their eyes when they see or experience something more. It is my job to show them a wonderful world just waiting for them to explore.

My Project

Many years back I read the novel, Wonder to my students and it has been one of the best ideas ever. The book's theme of kindness set the tone for my class and has continued to every year since. After reading Wonder, I was in search of more books with strong lessons on kindness and compassion.

My search led me to our next favorite novel, Out of my Mind.

Once again a story that filled my students heart with a new perspective on tolerance, patience and of course kindness. We often refer back to both novels when confronted with situations dealing with the topics expressed in the novel.

Earlier today, my school librarian brought it to my attention that the sequel to Out of my Mind had been released. A continuation of where we left off with our beloved character, Melody. I didn't waste any time in setting this project up in hopes of getting the class set before this school year ends.

I use these novels as daily lessons and reminders of how to treat others. In this world full of so much hate and animosity I want to show my students that love and kindness will always win.
