My Students

My students are active and excited to learn at school. I have high expectations for my students, their families, and myself. Although there have been significant gains since August, we still have tremendous work ahead of us. "Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other."- John F. Kennedy

I teach at an inner-city school.

My second grade students inspire me to provide opportunities not otherwise afforded to them. Many of my students and their families are working to overcome obstacles associated with homelessness, foster care, violence, refugee relocation, teenage parents, and poverty. I have tremendous parental support and families who want their children to become successful, contributing members of society.

My Project

My students have a very limited view of the world. Unfortunately, many of the children have witnessed violence in the neighborhood. I want to expose my students to the wonderful world we live in and introduce them to new experiences through photographs and engaging articles. I want them to be aware of current events and motivated by real-life heroes who act as change-agents. I will use Time Magazine for Kids to educate my students about our country, its people, and our customs and about events around the world. We currently do not have access to a printer. It's extremely difficult to teach without a printer to communicate with parents and provide resources for students. The printer will be set up in our classroom for student and teacher's use. My students will use the printer to publish their written work in order to share their writing. They will also print achievement certificates to take home when they make their reading and math goals.

Having a subscription to Time Magazine would improve our classroom by providing authentic real-world text which will engage my reluctant readers.

After reading the magazine in class, it will go home with the students to share with their families. This will provide a home-school resource for parents to discuss what their child is learning about in class and follow-up the lesson with a conversation at home.
