This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember how wonderful it was as a child to spend time outdoors observing nature? Our students don't have that opportunity regularly because they live in a high crime area. This grant would help us add our turtles to our outdoor courtyard, creating a more complete ecosystem for study.

Our students are 1st-8th graders in a high poverty/crime urban area.

They enjoy the classroom pets that we have because most have none at home. We have gotten a grant to add plants to our outdoor enclosed courtyard; a safe place for learning outdoors. Students came up with idea of providing a space outdoors for our Red Ear Sliders who are native to this area. The turtles will be more happy and our students can observe them in a more natural habitat; which is something they have never done. They will be able to observe other wildlife who also take advantage of an aquatic area such as birds and insects. They can even student microscopic pond life (after a period of time) and learn how to ensure our man made pond is as natural as possible as a habitat.

My Project

This 150 gallon stock tank is three times larger than the indoor tub that our turtles now reside in. During the months of May through early October they should be able to safely reside in this outdoor setting. We are a year round school with summer school classes during our short summer break. So constant care and learning is possible. Our outdoor courtyard is ideal learning environment for these students because it is completely enclosed; so safe. The turtles would also be safe from predators since really only birds and insects can enter this area uninvited. The stock tank is sturdy and should last for many years in an outdoor setting. Placing it so the top edge is soil level in our raised bed (large concrete bed) will make it appear to be a natural pond. I keep the turtles in their indoor tub by arranging a sunning place in the middle of the tub; so they can't use the sunning area for escape! Now the turtle can use the SUN instead of a light bulb for warming.

Our budget is extremely limited and this resource, while seeming a non-necessity is actually going to provide both a wonderful home setting for our turtles and a rich learning experience for students.
