This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are already keen observers and cultural anthropologists of their community, but they haven't always had the tools to express their observations and share them with the outside world.

We live in an urban community that is sometimes referred to as "The Town," but there is nothing provincial or small-time about these streets.

My students have grown up on this concrete playground and know the stories that lurk and loom around every corner. They also know the triumphs and joy that can spring up from every crack in the sidewalk. They are ready to tell these stories-- both the good and the bad-- and share them with the world.

My Project

Today's students are saturated with media and images. They are drawn to the idea of being creators of the content that barrages them every day. Once they get the Flip cameras in their hands, they become instant directors, producers, and cinematographers of their own stories. The easy technology of the Flip cameras then allows them to become digital editors and post-production experts. The students in my class who struggle with English as their second language or learning differences often find new voices in this media and are able to use the technology to tell their stories. In my classes, they will use the Flip cameras to document interviews and experiences from the vibrant community that surrounds us. The students will learn basic interviewing, film-making, and digital editing skills. They will also gain a sense of validation as the stories of their community finally become the stars of a movie.

Your gift will enable my students to harness powerful digital technology, to become creators of their own digital media, and ultimately share their stories with the world.

Today's students need to be technologically literate in order to be empowered. These Flip cameras will help my students take a vital first step. If we are able to get more local support through the Chevron Classroom Challenge, we can outfit our students with more cameras and a mobile editing station. Next stop, Sundance!
