My Students

My kindergartners love to read with their TAG pens so much that our books have become worn out! Pages and covers on our beloved copies that donors like you have provided are starting to loosen and fall out.

Each one of my 22 kindergarten students walks to school every day-- past the homeless, drug dealers, and street walkers that comprise the neighborhood surrounding our school-- the neighborhood they call home.

Most of their parents report that there are not books or reading material of any kind available for children to access in their homes. Many of their families do not speak English and are unable to assist students with reading activities.

My Project

Perhaps my most important goal as a teacher is to instill a love of learning, especially reading in my kindergartners. As I remind myself daily, the developmental window is still open and their personalities are still forming-- it is my job to create positive and safe feelings about school and learning. A fabulous, engaging and technologically advanced tool that has helped me meet this goal are Leapfrog's TAG pen readers. Technology embedded in each page of these books allows students to read word by word, practice comprehension through games and switch from book to book with ease. I know my students are hearing the right words on the right pages, unlike my previous listening center where students were on one page while the CD was on another.

These engaging story books promote literacy in an engaging, student centered manner that will instill a lifelong interest and love of reading in my students.
