My Students

I work in an inner city school that is home to our district's SAIL program for children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Our school is a Pre K-Grade 6 school where 48% of our students do not have English as a first language. 34% are students with disabilities and 84% are high needs. I teach in a sub-separate classroom. The degree of my students' disorders makes it impossible for them to be included in a general classroom setting.

My students require a highly modified curriculum, smaller class size, help with sensory regulation and a lower student/teacher ratio in order to be successful learners.

Special education teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction in science, math, English and history without many of the requisite tools to teach our students.

My students are 11 of the most creative , adventurous and funniest children I have had the pleasure of teaching. They all learn and grow in different ways through highly individualized instruction.

My Project

My students are wonderful. They deserve every opportunity to have a safe, welcoming environment that allows them to feel relaxed. Children diagnosed with autism have specific social and sensory challenges. Keeping the classroom structured with clearly defined areas is a necessity for my students who are easily distracted, overwhelmed by too much stimulus, have difficulty understanding the concept of staying in a specific area, or have trouble navigating the classroom

I am asking for a large classroom rug and flexible seating that will allow my students to meet as a group yet gives them the personal space necessary for optimal learning.

The beanbag chairs, bouncy bands, wobble cushions and stay in place balls have all been identified as ways to help students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder stay calm, engaged and attentive. The beautiful blue rug will physically define the area and give it a warm, relaxed feel. I am asking for two small tents with a chair cushion for my students who need a more enclosed, secure area during whole group activities. The basket is to to keep the fidget toys I'm also asking for close at hand.

I know that each and every one of my students will benefit from having a student centered learning environment designed for their specific needs.
